Dr. Michelle Gittler has been practicing rehabilitation medicine for 31 years at Schwab, a freestanding safety net rehabilitation hospital located on the near west side of Chicago, where she advocates for all individuals with disabilities, regardless of their socioeconomic status, for the highest quality of rehabilitative services. There she serves as the Medical Director for Schwab, and the CMO for post-acute care of the Sinai Health System.
While working on the near west side, she became an expert in working with individuals who sustained violently acquired disabilities, initially working as a trauma rehabilitation consultant at then Cook County Hospital in the early 90s. She has been on the forefront of promoting the concept of firearm injury as a public health issue. While she works with myriad kinds of disabling conditions, she is particularly interested in spinal cord injury care, and care of the amputee including prosthetic management.
In addition to patient care, Dr. Gittler is passionate about graduate medical education. She has been the residency program director at Schwab for 30 years. Dr. Gittler was the chairman of the medical education committee for the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation 2010-2016, and was a member of the Board of Governors for the American Academy of Physical Medicine and
Rehabilitation through 2021, when she served as the president. Dr. Gittler also worked with the American Board of Physical Medicine
and Rehabilitation as a senior reviewer on the part 2 exam committee for 13 years. She is currently working with the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, on the Future Visioning and curriculum committee for PMR.
Dr. Gittler graduated from the University of Michigan with degrees in engineering and history. She
attended medical school at University of Illinois where she graduated as a James Scholar. She completed
her residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Northwestern/Rehabilitation Institute of
Chicago. She is Board certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation as well as in spinal cord injury
medicine.
She is a Clinical Professor of Rehabilitation at University Of Illinois Hospital. She is a Clinical Associate Professor of surgery in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Chicago.
