Iain H. Kalfas MD, FAANS is a staff physician in the Department of Neurosurgery at the Cleveland Clinic. He received his medical degree from Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine and completed his residency in Neurosurgery at the Cleveland Clinic. His additional training included a fellowship in Neurotrauma at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania as well as a second fellowship in Spinal Surgery at the Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix, Arizona. Following his training, Dr. Kalfas was appointed to the Professional Staff of the Cleveland Clinic in 1989 as the Head of the Section of Spinal Surgery. He has also served as Chairman of the Neurosurgery Department from 2004-2007.
Dr Kalfas is a recognized leader in the spinal surgery. He pioneered the field of Image-Guided Spinal Navigation. His work in this area has led to numerous technical improvements in the way spinal surgery is performed. He is nationally and internationally recognized as an authority in complex spinal disorders requiring surgical decompression, reconstruction and fusion. He currently serves on the editorial board of Clinical Spine Surgery. He has given over 575 national and international presentations and has authored over 115 publications. He is a co-author of the text “Innovations in Spinal Reconstruction.”. He is a member of the American Association of Neurological Surgery, the Congress of Neurological Surgery, the American Academy of Neurological Surgery, the Neurosurgical Society of America, the North American Spine Society and the American College of Surgeons.
