Dr. Vates is Professor of Neurosurgery, Medicine (Endocrinology) and Otolaryngology at the University of Rochester Medical Center. He completed MD and PhD training at Weil Cornell University Mediial College; his PhD was with Fernando Nottebohm at The Rockefeller University. He then completed neurosurgery training the the University of California, San Francisco, under the mentorship of Drs. Charles Wilson, Mitch Berger, Mike McDermott, and Michael Lawton. After completing fellowship in cerebrovascular and skull base surgery with Dr. Arthur Day at Brighma & Womens Hospital, Dr. Vates joined the faculty at the University of Rochester, where his practice has focused on pituitary and skull base surgery. He founded the University of Rochester Pituitary Program, in conjunction with colleagues in Endocrinology and Otolaryngology, and started the Endoscopic Pituitary and Skull Base Program as part of that initiative. Dr. Vates has served as a Regional Director of the AANS for the CSNS, and is currently secretary of the New York State Neurosurgical Society and the Chair of the Coding and Reimbursement Committee of the AANS. Dr. Vates also serves as the designated AANS representative to the RBRVS Update Committee (RUC) of the AMA.
