Dr. John Ragheb is a pediatric neurosurgeon in the Division of Pediatric Neurosurgery of the Nicklaus Children’s Hospital Brain Institute at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital. He joined the University of Miami, Department of Neurosurgery in 1996, founding the Division of Pediatric Neurosurgery and establishing the Pediatric Neurosurgery fellowship in 2001. Shortly after joining the University of Miami, he began working with Dr. Glenn Morrison at the then Miami Children’s Hospital, and became Chief of the Division of Pediatric Neurosurgery 2003, serving in that role until 2023. He is the current Chief of the Nicklaus Children’s Hospital Department of Surgery. Dr. Ragheb is Professor of Clinical Neurological Surgery and Pediatrics, of the affiliated faculty of the University of Miami, Miller School of Medicine as well as Professor of Neurosurgery, of clinical faculty at the Florida International University, Wertheim School of Medicine.
Dr. Ragheb graduated from the Honors College at Johns Hopkins University, receiving his B.A and M.A. concurrently in 1981. He graduated in 1985 from The University of Michigan School of Medicine, trained in Neurosurgery at the University of Maryland and completed a Fellowship in Pediatric Neurosurgery at New York University Medical Center under the leadership of Dr. Fred Epstein in 1992. He is board certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery and the American Board of Pediatric Neurological Surgery. He served on the American Board of Pediatric Neurological Surgery for ten years and was the Secretary-Treasurer for the last five of those years. He is the past President of the American Society of Pediatric Neurosurgeons, having served on the Executive Committee for 16 years. Dr. Ragheb is also the past Chair of the American Academy of Pediatrics Section on Neurological Surgery, and was selected for 3 terms in the ACS National Committee on Trauma, serving as the Chair of the Neurosurgery Subspecialty Section during his last two terms. Dr. Ragheb has written on a wide range of topics including pediatric epilepsy surgery, CNS tumors, pediatric traumatic brain injury, hydrocephalus management and global neurosurgery. He has made neurosurgery care and education in the developing world a priority during his 30 plus years in neurosurgery having taught pediatric neurosurgery and neuro-endoscopy throughout the Caribbean, Central and South America. Since 2003, he has focused on providing neurosurgery care and teaching in Haiti, establishing Haiti’s only neurosurgery training program in 2015.
