Thomas McAfee is the president of Northwestern Memorial Hospital (NMH), an academic medical center based in Chicago since 2022. He also oversees Marianjoy Rehabilitation Hospital, and serves as a senior vice president for Northwestern Memorial Healthcare. As president of NMH, Mr. McAfee oversees approximately 7,000 employees at a Level I trauma center, with 945 staffed inpatient beds, and a campus that encompasses more than three million square feet in downtown Chicago in the Streeterville neighborhood.
NMH is an academic medical center and the primary teaching affiliate for Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, and flagship hospital for Northwestern Medicine. The hospital is ranked No. 1 in the Chicago Metro Area and Illinois, as well as No. 9 in the nation according to the U.S. News & World Report Honor Roll of America's Best Hospitals, 2022 – 2023, with 10 nationally ranked clinical specialties. NMH is a Magnet-designated hospital, which is the highest international recognition for quality nursing care.
Prior to his role as President of NMH, Mr. McAfee served as senior vice president of Northwestern Memorial HealthCare, president of the North and Northwest Regions of Northwestern Medicine, and president of Northwestern Medicine Lake Forest Hospital (NM-LFH); an academic regional referral center serving patients throughout the north shore of Chicago. Mr. McAfee led Lake Forest Hospital from 2006 to 2022, and was instrumental in advancing the merger with Northwestern Memorial HealthCare, in 2010. NM-LFH is the anchor hospital for the north region of the NM health system, and is ranked 9th in the state of Illinois and is integrated with the number one ranked cardiology program in the state, the Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute.
Prior to joining NM-LFH, Mr. McAfee spent ten years in leadership positions at the Cleveland Clinic; serving as a senior executive for operations of Hillcrest Hospital and vice president of Cleveland Clinic’s East Region Oncology Service.
Mr. McAfee is a board member of the Illinois Hospital Association and Presbyterian Homes, and a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives. He earned his Master of Hospital and Health Administration from Xavier University in Cincinnati and a Bachelor of Science degree from Wright State University.
