I grew up in Baghdad, amidst conflict, learning early that resilience is key to overcoming adversity. This environment, while challenging, taught me crucial lessons in perseverance and adaptability, traits vital for a career in neurosurgery. My academic journey began with a scholarship to the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, awarded for my top performance in Iraq's national exams. This opportunity was a turning point, enabling me to pursue my passion for medicine and surgery in a more stable environment.
My interest in neurosurgery is deeply personal, akin to a parent's unconditional love for their child. It's a commitment that has shaped my daily life, guiding my decisions and efforts. My time in Ireland was marked by academic achievements, including eight honorary medals and first-class honors, reflecting my dedication to excellence in my studies and beyond.
Returning to Iraq, I engaged in trauma neurosurgery research, confronting firsthand the stark realities of medical care in conflict zones. This experience solidified my commitment to global neurosurgery, highlighting the urgent need for skilled practitioners and resources in low-and-middle-income countries. It's a mission that has driven me to seek further training in the United States, where I've embraced the challenges of neurosurgery with the knowledge that each effort contributes to broader global health advancements.
Mentoring has become a significant aspect of my journey. Leading a group of 72 international medical students and doctors on over 50 projects, with 10 accepted at the AANS 2024, has been a rewarding experience. It underscores the importance of collaboration, education, and research in advancing the field of neurosurgery worldwide.
My story is one of navigating obstacles with determination, guided by a commitment to my field and a desire to contribute meaningfully to global neurosurgery. It's a path I've chosen, driven by the belief that with resilience and dedication, we can make a significant impact, even in the face of adversity.
