John H. Shin, MD is an American Board of Neurological Surgery certified attending neurosurgeon at the Massachusetts General Hospital and Associate Professor of Neurosurgery at the Harvard Medical School. He is the Chief of Spine Neurosurgery and Director of Spine Oncology and Spinal Deformity Surgery at the Massachusetts General Hospital. He is the inaugural Kingdon-Saylor Family Endowed Chair in Spine Neurosurgery and Co-Director of the Mass General Brigham Neurosurgery Complex Spine Fellowship. A native of Chicago, he trained in neurological surgery at the University of Illinois at Chicago and completed a combined neurosurgery and orthopedic spine fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic.
Dr. Shin specializes in complex spinal reconstruction surgery and is an internationally recognized thought leader in spine oncology surgery, primary malignant spinal tumors, chordoma, and metastatic tumors. He treats the full spectrum of spinal disorders and has particular interest and expertise in cervical spine deformity and chordoma surgery. Since joining the MGH Department of Neurosurgery in 2011, Dr. Shin has successfully developed clinical and research programs in adult spinal deformity and spine oncology, introducing novel surgical techniques, fostering multi-disciplinary collaborations, and developing regional spine surgery programs at network affiliates. In addition to clinical practice, Dr. Shin oversees a diverse portfolio of spine research including data science, artificial intelligence, biomechanical engineering, laboratory investigation, clinical trials, and spine outcomes research.
Dr. Shin serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Neurosurgery: Spine, Neurosurgery, Neurospine, and Spine. He has directed spine courses for professional societies including the North American Spine Society, Congress of Neurological Surgeons, AO Spine, American Association of Neurological Surgeons, and the AANS/CNS Spine Section. He currently serves on the Executive and Scientific Planning Committees and is Chair of the Exhibits Committee of the AANS/CNS Spine Section.
