San Francisco, California, United States
Dr. Rubio serves as an Assistant Professor at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), where he holds appointments in the Departments of Neurological Surgery and Otolaryngology. His academic focus encompasses vascular, white matter, and skull base neuroanatomy.
As the Director and Principal Investigator of the Skull Base and Cerebrovascular Laboratory at UCSF, Dr. Rubio oversees a dynamic research program exploring cutting-edge neurosurgery and anatomical modeling techniques. His research focuses on using cadaveric surgical simulations to push the technical boundaries of current neurosurgical practice. His team has contributed to multiple publications describing novel anatomical landmarks, running comparative analyses of microsurgical and endoscopic techniques, and redesigning well-known surgical corridors that can be directly translated into surgical practice for the safer management of complex intracranial cases.
Furthermore, Dr. Rubio's team is pioneering the integration of immersive educational tools to elevate and disseminate neuroanatomical knowledge for surgical training on a global scale. This includes organizing national and international 3D cadaveric workshops, describing workflows for generating and democratizing volumetric anatomical models, and establishing the UCSF Surgical Neuroanatomy Collection—the first open-access 3D anatomical repository of its kind.
