David J Puccio, B.S. is a first-year medical student at Albany Medical College, continuing his seventh year of neurological surgery research remotely with his alma mater, the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. David’s passion for medicine stemmed early on from his family’s genetic predisposition to breast cancer, later giving rise to a neurosurgical interest while studying neuroscience and economics in his undergraduate years. Neurotrauma grew to be his first specialized area of research while constructing a database for chronic subdural hematomas in the elderly cohort. This remains an area of focus as he continues to investigate predictive biomarkers for chronic subdural hematoma severity and recurrence in this population. After seeking out opportunities to explore breast cancer research, David was fortunate to join Dr. L. Dade Lunsford’s team researching stereotactic radiosurgery to treat brain tumors. The opportunity to spearhead projects on breast cancer brain metastasis resonates with him on a personal level, blending his family genetics and research interests. While exploring different realms in the neurosurgical discipline, David remains committed to the cause that began his journey and is aiming to eventually match into neurosurgery to pursue a subspecialty in neuro-oncology.
