Juliana C. Capp was born in Lages, Brazil and grew up in San Francisco. She studied Biological Engineering and Management at MIT then spent a decade as a Surface Warfare Officer-Nuclear in the United States Navy. She deployed throughout the Asian Pacific, Mediterranean, and the Persian Gulf for ballistic missile defense, anti-submarine warfare, and humanitarian aid/disaster relief missions. She earned awards for expertise in driving warships, excellence in nuclear engineering, and exceptional teaching in Suicide Prevention, Nuclear Engineering Fundamentals, Combat Operations, and other professional topics. Serving as a Lean Six Sigma Project Manager during the USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN’s complicated Nuclear Engineering Maintenance period sparked her interest in Quality Improvement (QI). Juliana completed the M.D. program at Georgetown University School of Medicine in the Leadership and Patient Safety Track and was honored with the Stacy L. Rollins Jr., MD Award for Neurosurgery.
As a resident, Juliana’s academic and clinical activities have focused on neurosurgical education, leadership, and QI. Juliana has led, managed or advised 19 QI projects during residency, with diverse aims including improving efficiency, reducing errors, and prioritizing patient safety. Under the mentorship of Dr. Ian Parney, she is the resident leader for the initiative to support all neurologic surgery residents in earning a Mayo Clinic QI certificate. Her early successes in QI initiatives led to her appointment as the Resident Leader on our Neurological Surgery Quality Committee and the Midwest Surgical Quality Subcommittee. In 2024, she earned the Mayo Clinic School of Graduate Medical Education Patient Safety and Quality Improvement Awards. Under the mentorship of Dr. Robert Spinner, she founded the Mayo Clinic Neurosurgery Residency Leadership Forum. She is currently completing a Surgical Outcomes Fellowship in the Robert D. and Patricia E. Kern Center for the Science of Health Care Delivery under the mentorship of Dr. Elizabeth Habermann. She is pursuing advanced clinical training in functional neurosurgery and plans to complete an enfolded spine fellowship. Outside of neurosurgery, Juliana enjoys horseback riding, skiing, hiking, and spending time outdoors.
