I’m Smruti Mahapatra, a 2nd-year medical student at Tulane University interested in exploring the intersection of neurosurgery and biomedical
engineering. As a graduate researcher at Johns Hopkins University, I utilized diagnostic and focused ultrasound in projects addressing conditions from spinal cord injuries to brain tumors. Post-graduation, I worked as an R&D engineer at Blackrock Neurotech, contributing to the development of neural electrodes. I also engaged in clinical research including COVID-19 vaccination studies. Before joining medical school, I worked in a systems neuroscience lab studying alterations in cortical organization in autism. At Tulane University, I participate in diverse multidisciplinary projects involving photoacoustic and micro-CT imaging, as well as advanced visualization techniques like medical image processing and 3D printing. As I progress in my medical education, my goal is to contribute meaningfully to the convergence of neurosurgery and biomedical engineering, advancing patient care and medical innovation.
