Tirone Young is currently pursuing a Doctor of Medicine degree at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York, NY. He attended the United States Military Academy at West Point from 2012 to 2016. There, he earned a B.S. in Nuclear Engineering, an Engineer-In-Training Certification through the National Council of Examiners for Engineering & Surveying, and a NCAA Division-I Varsity Letter playing Army Football as a walk-on. Upon graduation, he commissioned into the United States Army as an infantry officer, stationed at Fort Benning, Georgia. In 2017, Tirone then transitioned to become a nuclear engineer and nuclear medical scientist in the Medical Service Corps, assigned in Landstuhl, Germany.
There, he had a wealth of opportunity under the canopy of public health. Tirone was one of four licensed Health Physicists supporting the Army in Europe, Africa, and the Middle East, ensuring the proper use of radioactive isotopes and radiation-producing devices during diagnostic, therapy, and research actions. This expertise allowed him to operate as a proponent of global health engagement, working directly with our NATO and international allies on advancing universally beneficial healthcare strategies. In addition to radiation safety, and fostering international partnership, he functioned as a COVID-19 Surveillance Program Manager, directing the synchronization and analysis of COVID-19 surveillance testing for NATO military forces in Europe, Africa, and the Middle East within the Army’s only forward deployed ISO 17025 accredited laboratory.
During his last weeks of active duty service, Tirone supported Operation Allies Refuge, providing humanitarian backing as team lead for Servicemembers, Red Cross employees, and volunteers in support of repatriation and evacuation efforts for at-risk Afghan populations evacuating from Kabul, Afghanistan. Tirone was honorably discharged from the military in August of 2021.
