Resident
Univ. of California/Los Angeles Neurosurgical Residency
Los Angeles, California, United States
Dr. H. Westley Phillips is a 7th year Neurosurgery Resident at UCLA and is completing an NIH-funded pediatric epilepsy translational research fellowship at Boston Children’s Hospital under the mentorship of Dr. Christopher Walsh, Dr. Gary Mathern, Dr. Joseph Madsen and Dr. Scellig Stone. Wes grew up in Tulsa, Oklahoma and completed his undergraduate degree in Molecular Biochemistry and Biophysics at Yale University and was a member of the Varsity Football Team. As a college senior, he received a Fulbright Independent Research Scholarship where he traveled to Buenos Aires, Argentina to study mammalian hippocampal neurogenesis in the laboratory of Dr. Alejandro F. Schinder. He then earned his MD from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, graduating with a certificate of distinction in the Clinical Neuroscience Training Program.
As a neurosurgery resident, Wes developed a passion for pediatric neurosurgery with a special interest in epilepsy and subsequently has devoted his clinical and scientific efforts to better understand the pathophysiology of epilepsy. Wes is currently in his second year as a NIH R25 grant recipient and is investigating the genetic footprint of epilepsy by identifying somatic mutations associated with intractable pediatric epilepsy through many ongoing projects in the Walsh lab.
Wes is an avid sports fan and often spends his time outside of work rooting for the various Oklahoma sports teams. He is also a self-proclaimed “sneakerhead” and has quite the collection of kicks he would love to tell you about.
