What Matters is the chosen theme for the 2024 AANS Annual Scientific Meeting. In support of this mission, this course highlights the progress and impact of clinical data science within neurosurgical practice. This course will specifically focus on the evolution and critical evaluation of technical advances across neurosurgical subspecialties that are enabling the discovery of key insights in neurosurgical research, clinical trials and operating room/ancillary services. The stated aims of the course are to provide neurosurgeons with a foundational understanding of multiple data science models, each presented by an expert in the field, highlighting the role of a specific model within their practice. Each lecturer will then identify the key What Matters subject, topic or value within their work. These issues range from gender equality and inclusion, ethics of human subject research and the role of trust in AI, to addressing population bias and representation in predictions or outcomes. This course is designed for neurosurgeons, advanced practitioners, residents, clinical directors, software engineers and researchers with the hopes of engaging a multidisciplinary community to contribute to the pressing issues we face as a specialty as we embrace the outcomes and solutions provided by data science.
