Manish Aghi, MD, PhD, is a neurosurgeon-scientist and Professor and Vice Chair of Neurological Surgery and faculty in the graduate division of Biomedical Sciences at University of California San Francisco (UCSF). He is also a co-leader of the UCSF Neurologic Oncology Program. He has authored over 260 articles and 30 book chapters on brain tumors and has edited three books on brain tumors. He serves on the editorial boards for Journal of Neuro-Oncology, Journal of Neurosurgery, and Neurosurgery. Dr. Aghi’s basic science lab has been NIH-funded since his faculty appointment began in 2008. The Aghi lab studies how genetic changes in tumor cells and the cells in their microenvironment contribute to aggressive biology and therapeutic resistance in brain tumors. Dr. Aghi is also principal investigator of three phase I/II clincial trials using convection-enhanced delivery to deliver chemotherapies directly into brain tumors. Dr. Aghi has served as a standing member on NIH study sections for reviewing cancer-related grants for the past decade. Dr. Aghi was the Society for Neuro-Oncology (SNO) Young Investigator Representative from 2013-2016. During 2016 and 2017, Dr. Aghi served as scientific program chair for the SNO annual meeting, and in 2018 he was the SNO Awards Chair. From 2018 to 2020, Dr. Aghi was elected to and served as Chair of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons/Congress of Neurological Surgeons Joint Section on Tumors, which was formed in 1984 and has over 2000 members. His research has received numerous awards, including the SNO Young Investigator Award in 2013, the Preuss Award, the Mahaley-NBTS Award, the Integra Foundation Award, the Journal of Neuro-Oncology Award, and the Guha Award for career achievement as a physician-scientist from SNO and the Joint Section on Tumors in 2022.
