Research Fellow
Surgical Neurology Branch, NINDS, NIH
I'm Masahiro Oishi, MD. PhD, working as a research fellow in SNB, NINDS, NIH.
I became a neurosurgeon after I graduated from Kanazawa University School of Medicine in 2010. While working as a neurosurgeon, I became interested in brain tumor including Glioblastoma (GBM), astrocytoma, pituitary adenoma and meningioma. I conducted many clinical research on brain tumors under the mentorship of Prof. Jun-Ichiro Hamada. I decided that the final goal of my research was to completely cure GBM which is the most malignant and incurable brain tumor. Under the mentorship of Prof. Yasuhiko Hayashi and Prof. Yasuhiko Yamamoto, I started research on GBM. I gained academic background on many signal pathways involved in cancer including GBM proliferation, invasion and migration. In particular, I focused on Aquaporin 1 (AQP1), and identified a new signal flow which affect GBM invasion depending on the expression level of AQP1. I have received several grand for scientific research and have been conducting research on the potential of new therapeutic target using AQP1 inhibitor for treatment of GBM under the mentorship of Prof. Mitsutoshi Nakada. Now, under the mentorship of Dr. Desmond A Brown, for my initial project I am currently investigating the effects of primary cilia status change on the tumor malignancy, stemness, various signal pathways and tumor immunosuppression. I believe that my current research about primary cilia in GBM will provide a new therapeutic strategy and improve prognosis.
