Annabelle Shaffer MS is a medical student (MD, class of 2025) currently studying at Carle Illinois College of Medicine at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Prior to medical school, she earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in human nutrition. Annabelle is pursuing a residency in neurological surgery.
Her areas of interest include traumatic brain injury, epilepsy, and spine trauma. Her work in sports-related concussions in high school athletes has been previously featured by major news outlets. She has worked on several projects including deep brain stimulation for anorexia nervosa, applications of ultra-high field MRI for neurosurgery, clinical outcomes of conservative treatment for spinal fractures in the elderly, and investigation of fluorescein sodium in brain metastasis resection. Annabelle has also co-authored book chapters for spinal cord injury. She is currently involved in a number of upcoming research projects, including the investigation of CSF biomarkers in epilepsy and epidemiology and outcomes of structural epilepsy. Additionally, Annabelle is a skilled statistician, grant writer and manager, and scientific writer.
