Dr. Lekuya, Hervé Monka, MD, DTMH, MMED (Mak), FCS (ECSA)
He is a neurosurgeon who works as an assistant lecturer and research graduate fellow at the Department of Surgery/Neurosurgery, College of Health Sciences, Makerere University.
He is a joint-Doctoral Scholar in Medicine between Ghent University (Belgium) and Makerere Univerisity (Uganda).
He is also as an affiliate attending neurosurgeon at Mulago National Referral Hospital, the Teaching Hospital of Makerere University.
In his previous education, he completed brilliantly his undergraduate biomedical studies, medical school, and medical internship at the Université de Kinshasa, DRC in 2012 as the top best cumulative grade points over 800 students of the Medical school of the University of Kinshasa, supported by the BEBUC-fUNIKIN Excellence Scholarship. While he was doing his medical internship, he was chairing the Neuroanatomy Club of Vesale in both Université de Kinshasa and Université Protestante au Congo where he became so familiar with skull and brain anatomy.
Thereafter, he did a 6-month pre-residency in general surgery and neurosurgery in the Department of Surgery, Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital/ University of Ghana with a scholarship from the “Holger-Pöhlmann Stiftung” foundation.
He then studied a Master of Medicine (MMed) in General Surgery from Makerere University, Kampala, Uganda, working as a Surgical resident in Mulago National Referral Hospital, and completed it in 2017 supported by the BEBUC-fUNIKIN Excellence Scholarship. While in the Surgery training.
He then straight away joined the COSECSA - Duke University - Mulago Hospital Neurosurgery Residency training at Mulago National Referral Hospital since 2017 funded by the Duke Global Neurosurgery Neurology (DGNN). He graduated after passing the COSECSA board-certified examination in 2022.
Regarding his research and additional skills exposure, while in the neurosurgery training, he has been awarded the NuVasive Scholarship for Neurosurgical trainees of East Africa, and completed a 3-months clinical observership and research fellowship in Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery and Navigation at Weill Cornell Neurological Surgery in New York City, USA, and received additional funding the WFNS Foundation scholarship.
In 2019, he was awarded, among the top 5 young academic surgeons of Africa, the International Society of Surgery (ISS)-Foundation Travel Scholarship Awards in Krakow Poland.
He had several scientific presentations and attended several neurosurgical workshops in neurosurgical activities. I had an extended scientific network with several research and collaborative groups in neurosurgery;
Last year, he was awarded the Excellence Prize of the Young CAANS Neurosurgeons in Kinshasa in June 2023, and recently was awarded the prestigious “WFNS Atos Alves de Silva” Young Neurosurgeon Award 2023 in South Africa, Cape Town.
