Ian F. Parney MD PhD FRSC(C) FAANS. Dr. Parney is a neurosurgeon and cancer researcher at the Mayo Clinic. Born and raised in Calgary, Alberta, he attended college at McGill University and went on to receive MD and PhD degrees and complete neurosurgical training at the University of Alberta. After subspecialty training in neurosurgical oncology at the University of California San Francisco, he joined the faculty at the University of Calgary in 2004. In 2008, he was recruited to the Mayo Clinic where he has risen through the ranks to become Professor and Vice-Chair of the Department of Neurological Surgery. Dr. Parney has one of the largest neurosurgical oncology practices in the United States and performed almost 300 procedures last year. He has been instrumental in developing Mayo Clinic’s intra-operative MRI program and utilizing this in combination with awake brain surgery and brain mapping. His laboratory focuses on malignant brain tumor immunology, immunotherapy, and liquid biopsies targeting extracellular vesicles. He is principal investigator for multiple local and national brain tumor immunotherapy clinical trials and Co-Principal Investigator for the National Coordination Center of the Glioblastoma Therapeutics Network, an NCI-sponsored cooperative group. He is an internationally recognized brain tumor surgeon, researcher, and educator who has authored numerous peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Neurosurgery, and has supervised many undergraduate, medical student, pre-doctoral student, and post-doctoral research trainees. He is the Program Director for Mayo Clinic’s Neurosurgical Oncology Fellowship and is a longstanding member of the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine Admissions Committee.
