WILLIAM T. COULDWELL, M.D., PH.D. was born in British Columbia, Canada. Dr. Couldwell
attended McGill University in Montreal, where he received an M.D., Ph.D. (M.D. 1984) degree. He
had a neurosurgical residency at the University of Southern California. He is professor and
chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Utah, as position he assumed
in 2001. He is currently (or has served) on the Editorial Boards of several journals (including the
Journal of Neurosurgery, Chairman 2007-2008). He has served as on the Board of Directors of
the AANS, and is a Former Director of the American Board of Neurological Surgery (ABNS). He
was President of the AANS (2013-2014), President of the American Academy of Neurological
Surgery (AAcNS; 2016-2017), and President of the International Meningioma Society (IMS; 2016-
2017). He is currently Past-President of the World Academy of Neurological Surgery (WANS). His
clinical interests are in skull base and vascular neurosurgery. He is directing research in signal transduction and apoptosis in
gliomas, pituitary tumors and meningiomas. He has published over 600 peer-reviewed
manuscripts, 100 book chapters and seven books.
