James Mooney is a native of Princeton, NJ but was born in London, UK moving between London, Hong Kong, and Singapore before coming to the US at 8 years old. He attended The Lawrenceville School in New Jersey where he played varsity baseball and soccer. He went on to Amherst College in Massachusetts where he was a 4 year starter and 2 year captain of the men’s soccer team and majored in neuroscience, graduating cum laude in 2012.
Currently a chief neurosurgery resident at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, after residency he will be completing an AO Spine and CAST accredited fellowship in minimally invasive and complex spine deformity surgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC). During residency, he developed an interest in minimally invasive solutions to complex spine and has a passion for improving patient outcomes by utilizing big data resources such as the American Spine Registry (ASR) and Quality Outcomes Database (QOD). He has additionally applied for and secured grant funding to examine patient and radiographic outcomes after lumbar arthroplasty in comparison to traditional fusion techniques. James’ grandfather, Dr. James Mooney, was also a neurosurgeon and native of Princeton, NJ. James’ outside interests include running, soccer, golf, piano, snowboarding and wakeboarding.
