Dr. Edward Benzel is an internationally recognized thought leader in spine surgery and biomechanics. His clinical interests include cervical spondylosis, cervical spine deformity, and spine tumors. He has authored 10 and edited 27 textbooks. In addition, he has authored well more than 400 book chapters and 300 peer reviewed publications.
While Dr. Benzel holds multiple patents and has participated in many medical advances, he is perhaps best known as an educator. He started and directed the Neurosurgery Residency Training Program and the Spine Fellowship Program at the University of New Mexico, and has been instrumental in the development and success of these programs at the Cleveland Clinic. His innovations in education have won accolades and numerous awards. In February 2011, Dr. Benzel was chosen to receive the Paul C. Bucy Award for his exemplary efforts offering educational opportunities to his fellow neurosurgeons and was the Congress of Neurological Surgeons honored guest in 2014.
Dr. Benzel co-founded the World Spinal Society (later to become the World Spinal Column Society) and was its first chairman. He organizes and actively participates in multiple international education venues and is the Editor-in-Chief of World Neurosurgery.
Dr. Benzel stepped down as Chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery at Cleveland Clinic and has been bestowed the title of Emeritus Chairman of Neurosurgery. His focus has shifted from administrative duties to more education and career and program development roles at the Cleveland Clinic, while maintaining an active clinical practice.
