Alex Valenzuela is a fourth year medical in the UCLA-Drew Medical Education Program. Alex grew up in a single-parent home in the agricultural rich Central Valley as the son of a migrant farm worker. Growing up in this environment made him passionate about addressing health disparties in the low socioeconomic communities. He was the first in his family to attend college, attending UC San Diego for his undergraduate studies. Following graduation Alex worked the academic labs of Carolina Lopez PhD at the University of Pennsylvania followed by Meng-Meng Fu PhD at Stanford University. These experiences where formative in Alex's passion for translational science. During his time in medical school Alex served as Class President and DEI/LGBTQ Liason for the LMSA chapter. Alex completed a one year research fellowship at the NIH under the guidance of Dr. Zhengping Zhuang in the Neuro-oncology branch. Alex hopes to be a physcian-scientist who not only investigates novel treatments, but serves as a mentor for students of underrepresented backgrounds. He is incoming PGY1 Gen Surg. Prelim. at NYP-Cornell.
