The objective of this course is to assist those interested in applying to a neurosurgical residency program by helping medical students understand the essentials in the application process. We will discuss specific attributes that program directors, residents and faculty associate with a successful neurosurgery resident. Topics discussed will include research as a medical student, taking time off, foreign applicants, women applicants, neurosurgery mentorship and shadowing. Panels of both successful neurosurgery residents and neurosurgical department leaders (chairs, program directors) will discuss their “do’s & don’ts” for sub-internships and interviews and their optimal residency candidates. We will review all resources available through the AANS for assisting medical students in the process and during residency, as well.
